There are a number of sign materials available, and it usually gets difficult to know what kind of sign would be the best fit for you. Vinyl stickers and static clings can be easily confused with each other, and so below, we try to help you understand the differences these two materials.
Vinyl Stickers
They are basically heavy-duty stickers. The material sticks to a diverse range of surfaces, including plastic, glass, wood, and metal. They are printed with an opaque, full-color design on one side and adhesive on the other side, but this is customizable to suit your need. It can be weatherproof and has a spectacular gloss finish.
Pros: Vinyl stickers are perfect for outdoor use, because they are weather-proof. They last longer. They can be used on almost any surface type. Many design options are available, making them customizable to taste.
Cons: Removing a vinyl sticker takes a time, patience and effort (using a focused heat source). They are not reusable once they have been removed.
Best for: They are best used for long-term signage (permanent branding, like store hours on a shop entrance) due to their ability to endure outside exposure (Rain and UV).
Static Clings
These are made from a thin plastic film which essentially “clings” to different surfaces with static electricity. They will cling to smooth surfaces, like glass, metal, and plastic. They are generally printed with a solid design, vibrant full-color, and can have a glossy finish.
Pros: adhesive-free, so they can easily be removed, reused, and or repositioned. Both sides of the material can cling to glass (this makes them usable both inside or outside a window). There are varying size option; from small window cling stickers to the larger promotional signs.
Cons: Being adhesive-free translates to not being weather-resistant. They are not recommended for cars and other vehicle. Also, the material loses its ability to cling as time goes on and might need re-installation or even replacement.
Best for: Useful for short-term signage; (period less than 6 months), such as temporary branding and promotions. They also work best for personal events and celebrations.
To choose the right material, evaluate your needs and make the right choice.
